Creative DIY sculpture with sound : Prototypes

DIY Project 2:

6 string electric Cigar Box Guitar (acoustic guitar amplified)

Story:
1// Came across this youtube -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeZxIjL8u6g

2// Researched on biscuit tins
3// purchased suitable components to construct a first CBG:: scroll down to see 9//a,b,c,d
4// finally used this found tea box in a pile of scraps - I have cut the box down to the proper size.
5// sound wise, wood sounds more voluptuous than than metal
6// metal has a bright sound, with amplification, it has an interesting volume
7// with sound software, both wood and metal could be worked on to create new sounds
8// the CBG was made to the proportion of a standard sanxian, in order for the sound box to be interchangeable.
9// Interchangeable soundboxes:
Acquired from ebay+current supermarkets.
a/ Shakespeare vintage biscuit tin - vintage ebay
b/ Bourbon biscuit tin Marks and Spencer - vintage POP object - vintage ebay
c/ transparent round plexi- current supermarket, case for chocolates
d/ transparent rectangular plexi- 90's beanie baby storage case - currently purchased in a supermarket in Tainan

DIY Project 1:
3 string Cigar Box Guitar- Chinese sanxian base
interchangeable sound box, interchangeable pegs, Tanghulu transparent peg

transparent rectangular plexi- 90's beanie baby storage case, pale florescent multi-color tints gives the plexi sound box a shimmering pop art effect contrasting nicely to the very sober classic Chinese stem.  The instrument is transparent so we see all parts neatly.  There are no secret to a DIY Cigar Box Guitar, anybody could do it!

Story:
1// decided to make a first 3 string Cigar Box Guitar, to begin with I used an existing sanxian part.  Its a fretless instrument.
2// The classic sanxian tuning pegs are shown here
3// after many trials, I have successfully put on my own transparent tuning pegs using off the shelf elements from a hardware store.
4// The transparent box is to show that there is nothing other than the stem and the box.
5// amplifier will be added
6// sound is good but compared to a wood box, its not so rich.  Its has a slightly dampened sound due to the Plexiglas material, which is very dense, unlike wood which is porous and breathes.  Sound vibrates through wood.
7// interchangeable soundbox, and tuning pegs.

Applying raw lacquer onto the xyzQin #2.

Raw lacquer is toxic.
The fumes from the lacquer could cause inflammation.  We must wash hands with turpentine every 30mn, or wear gloves.  Masks, and goggles to limit fumes in contact to skin.

Location of the Making of these DIY instruments:
Chinese Instrument Workshop at Tainan University of the Arts, under the guidance of Master instrument maker Shan ZhiYuan

The environment is that of Ancient Chinese culture, both in architecture and cultural content.

View from my balcony on campus:

Chinese style architecture - antique bridges imported from China, installed in Tainan, Taiwan.  The little canal is filled with lotus flowers when in season.  Stone and pebble walkways.

xyzQin: design of inlaid for story telling graphics on lacquer wood support

The original Shosoin qin has a body full of inlaids of little figures of people playing music and writing poems next to a little stream.  This is an instrument with graphics which tells of the way of life of guqin/literati scholars.  If we are to make a contemporary qin, what kind of "tattoo", inlaid might be interesting?  Something that tells of our age, the new technologies of making and diffusing information, the life style, the new materials for the inlaid.  The xyz Qin #1 and #2 are also a support surface, a type of lacquer based display for the deployment of story telling using our current day drawing+graphic design.

Original Shosoin Qin and the inlaid :

1// Phase 1 of xyzQin #1 and #2 are both completed.  This means the guqins are totally ready to be played with fine finishes of to the lacquered body surface, ready for further inscription of name, skin graphics, as a completed, ready-to-play intrument.

Next, Phase 2, is the design of a contemporary story telling graphics which reflects the events of our days.
There will be New Media content, for now, application of new technology for information retrieval and visual graphics specific to our times.

2// We will also begin working on Phase 3, the small series 3d printing of our prototype in which the skins of each copy of the printed qin will be unique with its corresponding traceable story in a database.

Some 3d testing has been done using MakerBot printer - the existing material and time needed, finished resolutions are to be adjusted.

Below is the poster for Phase 1 of the xyzQin Project, presented at Leiden University in 2011.
