School of Arts and Cultures

 HCI, Human-Computer Interaction
Specific research topics have included: theorisations of media archaeology and provocative pieces exploring data as a material, the use of sensor-based systems to connect computation with other materialities, digital fabrication, the use of design traditions to inform the development of innovative interaction ideas, exploring digital technologies in live performance settings, sound art, improvisation and intermedia performance, data visualisation, wearable technologies, bio-signal interaction and embodiment, interventions in tourism and cultural heritage sites, aesthetic artefacts for domestic settings.

The work addresses and is delivered to a wide range of publics and has a deep concern with knowledge-exchange and enhancing the skills and opportunities otherwise excluded people have for participation. This has included long-term loans of pieces to relevant communities (including a group of cloistered nuns and some residential homes for older people), national and international exhibition, performances at international arts festivals, exhibition and participation in design and science festivals, creative workshops and future envisionment provocations ('living laboratories'), alongside traditional conference presentation and academic publication.

Digital media research is supported by Culture Lab, involves close collaboration with researchers across the arts and humanities, and, notably, with computer scientists in the university. Staff in the unit are co-investigators in the following:

Social Inclusion through the Digital Economy (SiDE) (2009-2014), £12M EPSRC Digital Economy hub based in Culture Lab. This project aims to tackle social exclusion by enabling access to the life-changing benefits offered by digital technologies.
The Creative Exchange (2012-2016). £4.2M AHRC.  Culture Lab, along with the Royal College of Art is a key partner in this 4-year Lancaster University-led Knowledge Exchange hub. This project specifically aims to develop industry and cultural-sector partners.
