Subject Title
Fundamentals Welding Processes
Subject Description
This subject is designed for individuals who are interested in welding and have little or no previous experience. Instruction is given on the correct use of Oxy Fuel Cutting and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding).
Credit Status
This is one credit toward the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Welding Qualification Recognition of Achievement
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate safe performance of oxy-fuel cutting and brazing.
  2. Perform SMAW welding in the flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions.
  3. Explain and understand the five major metal working processes (Oxy-fuel Cutting, SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and Plasma).
Cheating and Plagiarism
Each student should be aware of the College's policy regarding Cheating and Plagiarism. Seneca's Academic Policy will be strictly enforced.

To support academic honesty at Seneca College, all work submitted by students may be reviewed for authenticity and originality, utilizing software tools and third party services. Modes of Evaluation
Term Work and Final Exam
  • Students must pass the exam to pass the subject.
  • Students who pass the term but fail the final exam may, at the discretion of the Promotion Committee, be granted a supplemental exam, the maximum achievable grade for which is D.

Absenteeism and Exams/Quizzes/Tests
  • Students should be aware that absenteeism almost guarantees an inability to achieve satisfactory grades.
  • Students who are absent for an examination due to an emergency (e.g., motor vehicle accident, hospitalization or death in the family) may provide official documentation within five days of the missed exam and be provided a deferred exam at a later date.  Official documentation includes a death notice or an original doctor’s certificate identifying the date, length of time expected absence and the specific reason for the absence.  Examinations missed without official documentation and approval result in a grade of zero.
  • There are no deferred options for missed quizzes or tests.  The value of missed quizzes and tests, at the discretion of the Faculty, will be added to other evaluation components.

Grading is based on the following marking scheme:
Quizzes 30%
Practical Test 40%
Final exam 30%
